Writing a good articleWhat makes an article good or bad?. Is it perhaps the amount of links it gains, accurate grammar, or the page rank it will bring you?.

As a webmaster a successful article is the one that brings the most traffic, helps you build a reputation and brings you page rank. It sounds nice and easy but there are tons of articles and information which look like they were computer generated or written for search engines spiders.

Generating “articles” with software applications sounds like a dream come true to webmasters who want to capitalize their website through advertisements, without spending time writing quality articles. This is how spam sites are made. Spammers love the idea of quick money through the exploitation of Google’s Adsense program, which lowers data quality and web user’s experience.

The key to successful article writing is to realize that the content you write will be read by people looking for good information, not for advertisements.

Things to Avoid:

Things to avoid when writing articlesA common denominator between webmasters is the desire turn a business venture into a successful one. If you sell electronics through a website, keep in mind that people will be interested on the benefits and features such device offers. When some one reads an article about a certain gadget, the last thing they want to know is how many years you have been in business, why your site is so great or what else you have to offer, the reader wants to know more about the product!.

Unless your website has the potential to become the next YouTube and offers something so unique it can’t be found anywhere else, it would be a good idea to stick to quality information. This means that if you have a website which offers free video downloads it is best to write an article about:

“Ridiculous people caught on tape” OR
“Reach fame in a matter of seconds with Online Video Sites” OR EVEN
“Family Guy - TV Program Review”

If you are writing about Iphones don’t write things like:

ABC website offers top quality electronics and has been in business since 1900, so our information is the best there is!.

Iphones can be found at ABC website which imports electronic goods from China in order to pass the savings onto you.

Instead provide use full information such as:

The Iphone battery life has been greatly improved. It allows you to talk for up to 8 hours which is a great advantage over other 3G cellphones….

The bottom line:

DO NOT market your website in the article body!, do it in the author resource box!” . You should write information that will help the reader save time and the hassle of keep looking for related information.

Elements that add impact to an article:

If you want your article to be successful, you should consider using the following elements:

  • A Good article makes a difficult concept easy to understand to average readers. Avoid using technical terms unless it is necessary, but don’t misunderstand this point, If you are writing about cool PHP code then it is unavoidable to fall in technicalities.
  • Good articles target a current event or are newsworthy.
  • Write an emotional, controversial, funny, unpredictable or interesting story. Use the surprise factor to keep your readers from thinking “I’ve read this before”.
  • The article should be well written.
  • Present a new way of thinking about a common concept.
  • Use topics that appeal to a lot of people.
  • Offers a solution to a problem.

As you can see each of the elements above offers great value to article writing. Use them properly to build a rock solid foundation for your site.

I want to use articles to promote my affiliate ventures. Is there a way to do this that is acceptable? Anything?

Hi Chris!,

You can certainly promote affiliate programs, but you need to know how to do it. For example, editors do NOT allow affiliate links on author resource boxes so focus on writing “informative” articles related to the content you are trying to promote and NOT to the product you want to sell.

Make sure you research your keyword terms using tools such as wordtracker, wordze, etc. and use these terms to point to your site from the author resource box.

Since you can’t include affiliate links on the author resource box FOCUS on your landing page!. Many people link the resource box to just another article page, this has no effect at all!. So if you write an article, link it to a good landing page within your site, not your affiliate program.

Hope that helps a bit (^_^)…
